The International Inequalities Institute Annual Conference 2018 will open with the presentation of the Action for Equity Award, followed by a keynote speech from the Director of Oxfam SA, Sipho Mthathi.

Inequality in an African context

The opening session will present an overview of African development and inequality issues; from the impact of globalisation to the impact on Africa's youth.

Labour markets in Africa

10.30 - 12.30

Exploring key labour market issues, especially as they impact youth. This session will focus on addressing the questions: Why is productivity so low in many African countries? What can be done about it? What is constraining participation in the labour market?

With respect to each theme, the session should provide an overview of what is happening, what policies are in place and their impact, and discussing any promising initiatives and recommendations.

Pathways to Inclusive African development – industrialisation and agriculture

14.00 - 15.30

There are many potential solutions to un(der)employment in Africa, with the debate often focussing on whether to concentrate efforts developing the urban, industrial sector, or to focus on encouraging agricultural growth.

The session will explore the tensions and complementarities between the imperatives to industrialise and to develop agriculture, as well as touching on the opportunities for 'green industrialisation'.
